The Health Benefits of Bringing Your Lunch to Work

Processed foods contain some of the highest levels of sodium and preservatives than any foods consumed in a normal diet. If you are regularly buying your lunch from restaurants, food courts or other kiosks, you are being exposed to these high levels of sodium which can total three times the daily recommended amount of sodium from one meal.

Fast food restaurants are one of the biggest culprits for including sodium, preservatives and other chemicals in the food that is served. Considering that most people only receive thirty minutes to one hour for lunch each day, many people are driven to choosing fast food as their lunch choice. In the majority of fast food meals, the calories which are consumed can total more than three to four times the amount of a packed lunch from home.

Most people experience weight loss when they start bringing their lunch to work. As there are fewer calories from lunches that are brought from home, the weight loss can be seen in as little as two to three weeks after making the switch. With fewer calories being consumed there is not only an initial weight loss but also a decrease in the amount of bloating or water retention that can come from consuming high levels of sodium.

Healthy lunches packed with fewer calories and higher levels of nutrients can reduce the chances that tiredness will be experienced in the afternoon. When we consume unhealthy diets that are laden with high calories, fats and sugars, there is a high chance that fatigue will be experienced in the afternoon due to the lack of proper nutrients. Using healthy foods and balanced meal plans is an effective way to combat this fatigue as well as increase your productivity within the work place.

Bringing your lunch to work can also ensure that ingredients are used within the products that you approve of. For example, a visit to a restaurant can yield ingredients that you may be intolerant to, or simply may not approve of. Packing your own lunch allows you to choose foods that are within the values you hold, such as the food being organic, local or even simply food that is low in calories and healthier. Choose your own foods to ensure that you are getting exactly the foods that you think you are.
